Job Description

Winnipeg is Canada’s 7th largest city with a population steadily growing towards 1 million.  The ‘heart of the continent’, Winnipeg is located on Treaty One Territory and the Traditional Homeland of the Métis Nation.

One of the countries most diversified economies, Winnipeg has withstood economic pressures and downturns – keeping us strong and resilient.  With CentrePort, Canada our premier multimodal Inland Port we are an agri-business hub, with strong trade and manufacturing sectors including many international transportation, aerospace, and bus manufacturing businesses, with more to come.  Winnipeg has strong financial and insurance businesses, with major employment in educational, health and nationally influential social service sectors. With favourable provincial tax credit incentives Winnipeg’s television, film and commercial services have been growing steadily along with video games production.

As a city placing its highest priority in quality of life for all its citizens, The City of Winnipeg is recruiting for their next Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) – a key role that will help to lead Winnipeg’s continued journey towards a city of human rights, of safety, transparency and innovation.

Repeatedly named one of the world’s top 7 Intelligent Communities, The City of Winnipeg has been recognized internationally in various areas of innovation and cutting-edge initiatives. The public service has won numerous awards recognizing financial excellence as well as awards and recognition for aviation safety and virtual remote police reporting with the Winnipeg Police Services. The City of Winnipeg has also been recognized by North American agencies (Seattle in particular) for the innovative and transformative approach to asset management.  Most recently Winnipeg made the Intelligent Community Forum’s Smart21 list for the ninth time in the past 11 years due to the use of technology to serve the people, businesses, and institutions of Winnipeg.

Reporting to the Mayor, Council, and to the residents of Winnipeg, the CAO is responsible for the leadership and delivery of the City of Winnipeg’s operational and administrative services and will be a partner to our community.  They will lead an executive team to achieve an affordable, responsive and innovative public service.  Within the public service and city-wide they will be counted on to champion a community of collaboration, inclusion, development, sustainability, and innovation.
