Job Description

The School of Public Policy and Administration, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University invites qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream tenure-track appointment in Indigenous Governance in Canada at the Assistant Professor level, to commence July 1, 2023. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

The mission of the School of Public Policy and Administration is to provide "Education for Good Governance." The School's programs are characterized by a strong emphasis on social justice, public ethics, and commitment to democratic values. Students in our programs take courses from a mix of disciplines that provide a breadth of knowledge and opportunities to develop critical thinking, analytical capabilities, and management skills. The School offers opportunities for professional development through experiential education  in collaboration with partners in the broader public service.

A PhD in law, public policy, or related discipline (PhD completed by July 1, 2023) or PhD equivalent (typically a SJD or LLM/MPP/MPA/MA with a substantial record of professional experience in Canada in Indigenous governance, public or administrative law, public administration, and/or equity and anti-racism policy) is required with a critical awareness of the ways in which administration and law have served as tools of colonization historically and in the present context, along with a demonstrated record of excellence or promise of excellence in research, teaching, and service. Applicants should have a clearly articulated program of research and publications/expertise in Indigenous governance in Canada. Expertise in one or more of the following areas would be an asset: anti-racism policy related to Indigenous peoples in the Canadian context, Indigenous urban issues and civic engagement in Canada, critical analysis of the intersections between Indigenous governance and Canadian public and/or administrative law.

The successful candidate will be expected to engage in outstanding, innovative, and, as appropriate, externally funded research.

Candidates are invited to share evidence of research excellence or promise of research excellence in their research statement; a list of publications, if any; experience in governance, policy development, or public/non-profit/community-based administration; presentations at conferences; awards and accolades; and recommendations from referees.

The candidate will have the ability to enhance the reputation of the School of Public Policy and Administration. The position will involve graduate teaching and supervision in the executive-style Master of Public Policy, Administration and Law (MPPAL) program, as well as undergraduate teaching. As a result, the successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Evidence of excellence or promise of excellence for junior appointment in teaching will be provided through: the teaching statement; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning; teaching evaluations; and strong letters of reference.
