The Opportunity: Director, Recreation & Culture
Reporting directly to the General Manager, Parks, Recreation & Culture, the Director is responsible for providing overall leadership to the Recreation & Culture Department. This role leads the planning and delivery of services to the community and provides strategic advice, counsel and guidance on critical issues that have community impacts. This position plays a significant role in overseeing and managing a large workforce of unionized and exempt employees as well as a variety of Recreation & Culture services provided by non-profit societies. The Director, Recreation & Culture is responsible for the planning, provision or facilitation of services and facilities that include arenas, aquatics, fitness centres, community recreation and culture centres and public outdoor space.
The incumbent is required to liaise with other levels of government, external agencies, and non-profit societies and maintain a working relationship with City Council, Administration and all departments within the corporate structure as well as with local community groups and businesses.
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline (e.g. Business Administration, Recreation Management) and 8 years’ progressively responsible related experience, including 4 years in a management supervisory role;
A Master’s Degree in a related discipline and certification or training in local government administration would be an asset;
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
