Job Description

The City of Markham is seeking applications for 6 independent members for the Board of Directors of Destination Markham Corporation (DMC), a new municipal services corporation approved by City of Markham Council in 2018. DMC’s mandate is to market and promote Markham as a four-season destination and tourist attraction, with the goal of strengthening and expanding Markham’s tourism economy.

Markham is a dynamic and high-growth municipality centrally located in the Greater Toronto Area, in the centre of Ontario’s innovation corridor. Known for event and entertainment facilities, such as Markham Pan Am Centre and Flato Markham Theatre, and events including Markham Jazz Festival, Taste of Asia, Markham Fair, and more, Markham is also home to a wide variety of international cuisine.

Successful candidates shall be appointed by Markham Council with staggered terms of appointment. Directors should demonstrate sound judgement, personal integrity and business expertise related to the tourism industry and serving on a Board. This will include expertise in one or more of the following areas: finance, legal, marketing, operations and economic development.
Knowledge of Markham and experience with public-private partnerships would be considered an asset. The ability to work effectively as a board member and strong communication skills are essential. Candidates are expected to participate in setting, implementing and monitoring strategic marketing direction and plans that address Markham’s goals and objectives as a meeting, tourism and entertainment destination.
