Topic: Government Performance Measurement and Policy-Making
Are you interested in studying and improving approaches to the measurement of government performance in the context of policy-making?
Robert Hughes, CEO of Civonus Inc. and Dr. W. Dominika Wranik Professor in the Faculty of Management at Dalhousie University are looking for a keen PhD student with a promising track record of research at the Masters level and/ or professional experience in government who enjoys engaging in interdisciplinary research.
Details of the position
The student will compete for a Doctoral Fellowship financed by Civonus Inc. and Mitacs that will fund a four-year doctoral degree. The Interdisciplinary PhD program at Dalhousie University offers the perfect home for the topic under investigation.
Depending on their academic/ professional background, the student will study public administration and policy sciences, including but not limited to organizational design, intergovernmental relations, research methods, and program evaluation. Depending on interest, the student will be able to focus on specific areas of government (e.g., health, taxation, education, or environment) and supplement their studies with relevant courses. The student will provide agreed upon deliverables to Civonus Inc. alongside their PhD program requirements.
Broadly, the topic of the deliverables and the dissertation will focus on government performance measurement approaches and policy-making, including theoretical frameworks, criteria, and measuring instruments.
Profile of candidates
The ideal candidate will have a strong academic background in a relevant graduate program, such as public administration, public policy, political science, or organizational management. Experience working with the Canadian public service will be considered an asset, and we envision that this opportunity might be of particular interest to a mid-career public servant. Previous research experience will be an asset, and an variety of mixed academic and professional experiences will be considered.
Funding
The target start date for the PhD program is September 2023. In addition to the four years of funding through the Doctoral Fellowship, opportunities for teaching assistantships or teaching assignments may also be available. Furthermore, the student will be encouraged and supported in applying for external funding from, for example, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
