Executive Director & Chief of Staff, University of Calgary

Primary Purpose of the Position:
The purpose of this position is to serve as the primary strategic advisor to the President. The Executive Director & Chief of Staff is an integral position to driving the strategic direction of the university, focusing both on short-term proximal needs and issues management, and long-term trends, initiatives, and opportunities. In doing so, the Executive Director & Chief of Staff will develop key relationships with internal faculty, staff, and students, and external stakeholders, including government officials, community members, and donors.
Accountabilities/Tasks and Duties:
Strategy Development & Strategic Initiatives
-Supports the President and Executive Leadership Team in strategic planning for the university.
-Leads and supports strategic initiatives as required, often developing briefings, analysis, options, and recommendations
-Stays current on trends in the public sector and post-secondary landscape, keeping the President and others informed of emerging trends.
Operations, Project, and Issue Management
-Provides quality, well-reasoned and informed advice, counsel, and recommendations to the President and others on issues facing the University.
-Works directly on behalf of the President to manage and resolve a large variety and volume of sensitive and time critical issues.
-Mobilizes the appropriate expertise and resources in response to key institutional issues and decision-making.
-Serves as a project manager, working in close partnership with various stakeholders to ensure accountabilities are met for a wide number of complex initiatives and projects.
-Works with Human Resources on issues regarding the hiring, development, and other related personnel matters for the executive leadership team.
Leadership, Stakeholder Management, Relationship Development
-Serves as a member of the Executive Leadership Team and Senior Leadership Team.
-Develops productive working relationships with colleagues at all levels across the university
-Builds and maintains relationships with international, national, provincial, and local stakeholders and community partners.
Oversight of the Office of the President
-Responsible for direction and oversight of the administrative, financial, human resources, facilities, and planning functions. This includes oversight of five direct reports that provide support in various capacities.
-Supports the President to manage meetings and committee work on his/her behalf.
-7-10 years of work experience at a senior management level in a large complex public sector organization.
-A graduate degree in business administration, public policy, or a related discipline or an equivalent combination of education/experience, is preferred.
-Extensive knowledge of the post-secondary environment in Alberta.
