Burnaby has a vision of being a world-class city committed to creating and sustaining the best quality of life for the entire community. With its Sustainable City initiative – including the award-winning Economic, Social, Environmental and Housing Sustainability Strategies – Burnaby has garnered recognition as a progressive and innovative civic leader amongst its peers locally, provincially and nationally. The community has a strong cultural mosaic and is home to many thriving town centres, two of Canada’s top post-secondary institutions, much-loved parks and wilderness areas, some of the country’s most successful businesses, many arts and cultural amenities, and much more. Reflecting the core values of Community, Integrity, Respect, Innovation and Passion, the Burnaby team continues to build upon the city’s reputation as a wonderful place to live, learn, work and play.

With the global pandemic heightening the importance of community, municipalities are playing a vital role in citizen wellbeing and economic recovery. Focused on actualizing itself as the world-class city it is, Burnaby is seeking a new City Manager to lead through unprecedented times. Reporting to Mayor and Council, the City Manager is accountable for reflecting a citizen-centric approach and perspective in the strategies, business plans, programs and services which align with Council’s priorities. The City Manager is responsible for shaping an organizational culture that supports the City’s most valuable resources: the employees who are encouraged to be innovative, progressive, collaborative, and results-oriented while focusing on emerging trends and best practices. The City Manager also plays a significant role with Metro Vancouver, regional and provincial bodies on strategic issues affecting the City of Burnaby.

As the ideal candidate, you will bring:

Proven leadership skills with the ability to build high performing, collaborative teams, and mentor a diverse group of functional experts while also partnering with union leadership to support the workforce.
Very strong relationship and communication skills that showcase an ability to work across broad service areas and inspire a progressive, supportive and customer-centric approach and culture.
An ability to champion, navigate and effectively implement change and new approaches to established processes.
A demonstrated ability to support the vision of a diverse Council and implement priorities such as housing affordability, climate change and mitigation, and active transportation to promote a complete community.
A measurable track record in making a difference as it pertains to equity, diversity, inclusion and reconciliation, with an ability to bring together a wide range of experiences, perspectives and opinions.
