Nova Scotia was the first province in Canada to enact a Freedom of Information Act in 1977. Since that time, all other jurisdictions in the country have followed suit. Our team works to ensure access to information and protection of privacy through research, investigation, analysis and mediation. The Review Officer also investigates alleged privacy breaches and provides public education.

About Our Opportunity
As the Review Officer, you will have the authority to perform a broad range of responsibilities, duties and functions as prescribed in the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, the Privacy Review Officer Act, the Municipal Government Act (Part XX) and the Personal Health Information Act.
In this role you will serve as the head of the Office, responsible for issuing an annual report on the exercise of the functions of the Review Officer under the Freedom of Information and Privacy Act and must lay the report before the House of Assembly.
You will provide independent advice on access and privacy related matters, as well as best practices to ensure ongoing compliance with Nova Scotia’s access and privacy laws.
You will work with various levels of government and public bodies with a view to upholding democratic principles of openness, transparency, and accountability. You will also provide executive leadership for the effective administration of Office programs and operations.

• Providing independent advice and oversight with respect to compliance with access and privacy law requirements.
• Leading a team of professionals with diverse and specialized expertise that conducts core business functions including complaint and review investigations and mediations, compliance monitoring, and initiating investigations including systemic investigations.
• Leading the Offices’ core business functions, including access reviews, complaint investigations, and mediations.
• Ensuring the development of a comprehensive case management strategy that ensures that Office is able to respond to current and emerging access and privacy issues while providing an independent, impartial, timely, fair, transparent, and accessible complaint and review process.
• Maintaining sensitivity to the external environment by managing positive relations through communications and executive level linkages with key stakeholders to enable dialogue around access and privacy issues, and the identification of emerging access and privacy risks and mitigation strategies.
• Ensuring public awareness of access and privacy rights by overseeing public awareness based on expertise in emerging access and privacy issues, particularly in the area of new and emerging technologies, best practices, and effective access and privacy management strategies.
This may be the right opportunity for you if you have an undergraduate degree from a related discipline such as Business, Information Management or Law; an equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
As the ideal candidate, you have:
• Relevant experience in progressively more responsible leadership and management roles;
• Comprehensive knowledge of the Nova Scotia’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, Municipal Government Act and Regulations and other applicable legislation;
• Knowledge and understanding of the principles relating to access to information and protection of privacy matters, administrative fairness, openness, accountability and government policies and procedures;
• A proven track record working in leadership and management roles with experience in public speaking and facilitation;
• Exceptional relationship building and communication (Written and Verbal) skills with an ability to read, comprehend, interpret and apply legislation.
• Strong time management, planning and organizational skills, and comfortably able to manage multiple priorities with competing deadlines. You also have excellent research and process evaluation skills.
While not required, it is considered an asset if:
• You have direct experience in the access and privacy field;
• You have training and/or experience in mediation or alternate dispute resolution.

Pay Grade: BIWEEKLY
Salary Range: $4,507.66 - $5,662.07 Bi-Weekly
