The Government of Nunavut is seeking a Comptroller General to play a crucial role in these efforts as part of its Department of Finance’s executive management team. 

Based in the territory’s capital of Iqaluit, Nunavut, you will perform a range of key functions related to the oversight, control, and reporting of Nunavut’s public resources. 

A strategic thinker with the ability to work well with others, you will lead the Department of Finance’s 132-person Comptrollership branch, with the support of an Assistant Comptroller General. The Branch itself is made up of several divisions, including regional operations based in Cambridge Bay, Rankin Inlet, and Igloolik.  

Your leadership will be noticeable as you and your teams work to enhance financial disclosure and planning, deliver the accurate and timely production of public accounts, and support the efficient delivery of financial services operations across the GN, including the government’s own compensation and benefits function. You will be tasked with determining how government departments and agencies report their financial operations, and you will lead the implementation and evolution of these procedures. Your work will have direct and meaningful impacts across Nunavut’s consolidated entity.

Possessing an exceptional ability to communicate complex issues, you will monitor compliance with financial authorities, clarify financial roles and responsibilities, and ensure the effective functioning and maintenance of the GN’s financial information systems. You and your teams will work to improve government operations through internal audit services, and by providing excellent advice on modern and evolving accounting practices.

Your strong conceptual and reasoning skills will help you engage directly with departments to resolve financial issues and identify solutions. Monitoring territory-wide compliance, consistency and coordination, you will analyze trends and perform timely reviews and updates of procedure and process documentation, stay current on relevant emerging technologies, and recommend policies and practices related to ensure proper financial operations and reporting.

You bring extensive knowledge and experience in financial policy development and public policy analysis, gained from 10 or more years’ experience managing program and service delivery at a management level, five of which should be at a senior or executive management level. Your university degree in Public or Business Administration or related field is augmented by your Canadian professional accounting designation. Your technical skill set is complemented by a good understanding of territorial statutes, financial management processes, information structures and technologies, and budgeting. 

You are able to exercise superior judgement with incomplete information and/or without precedent. You are adept at maintaining long-term perspectives while delivering creative, short-term solutions. Your superior communications skills and the ability to foster cooperation within a diverse cultural, functional and technological environment are essential.  

The official languages of Nunavut are Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun, English and French. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official language would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit would also be considered an asset.  A satisfactory Criminal Records Check is required for this position.
