Two First Time Managers
Challenges in Developing a Managerial Identity
Author: Richard Paton
Publication Date: 2018
This case examines the challenges of two managers taking on their first leadership role within their organizations. The challenges involve assuming new roles, transition from the job of subject matter expert to management, often working in a different relationship with colleagues who had been the new manager’s equivalent levels. Part of the transition is clarifying the expectations of superiors who often placed the person in the role. Added to this, the new manager is often not familiar with the administrative elements of the organization such as finance, human resources and information technology. These short cases would be useful in class discussions on this topic.
