Resource Allocation Problems in Health Care Institutions
Author: Joan Campbell, JaneFulton, Linda March,Ellen Pekeles
Publication Date: 1988, 2004
Resource Allocation Problems in Health Care Institutions is a three-case series whose theme is explored in a physiotherapy department, a cardiac catheterization unit and an emergency department. Although these cases present students with a variety of situations and key players, the same question arises in each: "How does the manager find resources to respond to an increasing patient load?"
Westmount Physiotherapy and Toronto Heart Institute challenge students with the demands placed on hospital resources by physicians. Class discussion of these cases is usually over productive if a physician is invited to participate.
Emergency Department, Community Hospital brings students face-to-face with the increasing admittance to emergency rooms of battered women and abused children.
The case also asks students to weigh the evidence for and against social services as an integral part of the health team.
