Nova Scotia’s official dog is the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, one of five recognized Canadian breeds of purebred dogs. It was developed in the Little River district of Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia around the beginning of the 20th Century to toll waterfowl.

The Royal Bank of Canada and Scotiabank began in Halifax as the Merchants’ Bank of Halifax in 1864 and Bank of Nova Scotia in 1832 respectively.
