Susanne Thiessen

Bio

Susanne is currently an Assistant Professor in Indigenous Community Development in the School of Public Administration at UVic. Susanne has a Doctorate in Business Administration with a focus in organizational leadership. Her research examines First Nations cultural approaches to work and the relationships of administrative practice and policies to employee engagement for First Nations people. As an Indigenous scholar and researcher, her work privileges Indigenous knowledge in examining and framing research outcomes. She has a current designation as a Certified Professional in Human Resource Management.

A strategist in Indigenous governance and organizational development transformations – Susanne has extensive experience creating and implementing programming to decolonize governance and management practices in complex stakeholder environments has had a leadership role in many organizations to indigenize organizational approaches and policy. Grounded in business, leadership, and public administration she provides customized organizational development planning and development that incorporates Indigenous ways of knowing and doing.

In addition to her academic work she has facilitated complex conversations between multiple interests (government/FN/Industry) in the oil and gas sector in BC; Facilitated dialogue and processes for Treaty implementation for BC First Nations; led Indigenous community engagement for modernization of emergency services in BC, the health and cultural sectors; completed business and organizational development planning for Indigenous organizations and has provided Indigenous community based applied training in communication, strategic planning, conflict management, organizational planning, and Human Resource processes.
