Nigerian Leadership Training Program

Picture

Country: Nigeria
Funding Agency: Government of Nigeria
Duration: July 2008 (start date) – project is ongoing
IPAC Lead: Ann Masson amasson@ipac.ca

Project Description:

For any country, rapid urbanization presents a host of challenges, as well as opportunities. The Lagos State Government in partnership with Lagos Local Governments has established the Eko Akete International Summit on Lagos 2015 Megacity Project as a forum for discussing the “renaissance” of Lagos state. As part of the forum, IPAC has been asked to deliver a leadership program for Nigerian government officials.

As a first step in our new leadership program, we were invited by Commissioner Fouad Oki, the Honourable Commissioner of the Local Government Service Commission, to organize a Canadian team of experts to present papers and participate in discussions at a conference in Lagos in July 2008. The themes of the conference were the UN Millennium Development Goals, sustainable megacity development, Public Private Partnerships, and gender equality. Thanks to the participation of Godwin Ekere, Cathie Macdonald, Susan McFadden, Ed Sajecki, Naomi Enid Slack and Tumbi Sosan, IPAC presented a dynamite team. We look forward to collaborating with our Nigerian counterparts on next steps for programming.

Goals and Objectives:

The aims of the leadership training program are:
·     To investigate ways of attaining the UN Millennium Development Goals in Lagos megacity by 2015;
·     To clarify the roles to be played by governments (local, provincial and federal) in achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015;
·     To promote institutional reform by addressing the challenges to service delivery in megacities;
·     To promote transparency, accountability, participation and equity in governance; and
·     To foster gender equality and the empowerment of women in Lagos.
