Deputy Ministers in Canada: A discussion with Jacques Bourgault on Comparative and Jurisdictional Perspectives
HMCS Bytown Officers’ Mess, 78 Lisgar Street, Ottawa; Crowsnest Room (top floor)
Deputy ministers command an impressive array of government budgets and employees in Canada, but despite their importance, they have not been the subject of systematic study until now.

Join IPAC for a talk by Dr. Jacques Bourgault, who co-edited the recently-published book, Deputy Ministers in Canada: Comparative and Jurisdictional Perspectives. Based in Montreal, Dr. Bourgault is the 2012 recipient of the IPAC Vanier Medal, in recognition of his lifetime of important contributions to the public administration literature. This talk will focus on the role of deputy ministers both federally and provincially, taking into account social, political, and administrative history; the socio-economic characteristics of deputy ministers; the politicization of recruitment processes; the impact of the New Public Management movement; and political-bureaucratic relations. Order forms for the book will be available at the event.
