IPAC-U: Visualization, Data, Theory - Dr. Mike Savage
A Lunch and Learn Session

Visualization, Data, Theory

Professor Mike Savage, London School of Economics, Distinguished Visitor

After many decades of being sidelined, effective visualisation is increasingly seen as fundamental to effective social science communication. Many of the most high profile contributions to social science research have produced distinctive ‘hallmark’ visualization, which crystallise arguments and construct narratives. This shift has been facilitated by digital advances. Yet there are important issues about the principles by which visualisations can be deployed and concerns about how they may be inappropriately used. This session reviews these issues and will allow all attendants to talk about and consider their own use of visualisations.

Prof. Savage (LSE) is a world-renowned scholar of social inequality.

PREPARATION: please bring your favourite 'social science visualisation,' such as statistical tables, charts, photos, cartoons, etc., and be prepared to talk for 2-3 minutes about your choice. This can be drawn from your own work or research, from anyone's publication, the media, the internet, etc.

NOTE: All attendants must obtain a visitor's pass from the reception desk on the main floor of ATB Place. Reception will be provided with a list of registrants in advance of the event.
