Bryan P. Davies Honoured with 2010 Vanier Medal
Ottawa, August 23, 2010 – Bryan P. Davies, currently the Chair of the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation and Vice-Chair of the Canadian Securities Transition Office, is the 2010 recipient of the Institute of Public Administration of Canada’s Vanier Medal.
“What stands out is Bryan’s sincere commitment to innovation and excellence in public service and his ability to get things done,” says IPAC President, Wynne Young.
“He is a personal architect who builds strong relationships and partnerships that have strengthened public administration in Canada,” wrote Peter Barnes, former Secretary to Cabinet in Ontario.
Mr. Davies’ distinguished public service career includes positions at the federal and provincial levels, as well leadership positions in the university and private sectors. He began in the 1970s as a manager with the Ministry of Treasury, Economics and Intergovernmental Affairs. He returned to that ministry as its Deputy after having served as Assistant Secretary to the Management Board of Cabinet, and as the Deputy Minister of Citizenship & Culture, Financial Institutions, and of Housing. He has served as Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer of the University of Toronto before later joining the Royal Bank Financial Group as Senior Vice president of Corporate and Regulatory Affairs.
As Grant Reuber, former deputy minister of Finance and president of the Bank of Montreal wrote, “Bryan leverages his own enormous talents by eliciting the very best from those he works with.”
A firm believer of strong links amongst the various sectors of our society, he returned to public service as the Superintendent of the Financial Services Commission of Ontario, before taking on his present assignments with the federal government.
“Bryan is one of those deputies who could handle virtually any job in government, not only in terms of changing previous policies but in laying down the foundations for future growth and creativity,” said the Hon. David Peterson, former Premier of Ontario.
Mr. Davies is an energetic volunteer for several not-for-profit organizations, notably in the cultural and education fields. He has served as Chair of the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation and on the Boards of the Ontario Heritage Foundation, the National Gallery Foundation and the Foundation for International Training. Mr. Davies also sits on the School of Policy Studies Advisory Council for Queen’s University and Trent University’s Board of Governors, and serves on the IPAC Endowment Fund.
Founded in 1947, IPAC is an association of public servants, academics, and others interested in public administration. It is a membership-based organization that creates effective knowledge networks and leads public administration research in Canada, and has been a major player in exporting successful Canadian public-sector expertise around the world.
The Vanier Medal is the Institute’s highest form of recognition. Created in 1962 in honour of the Right Honourable Georges-P. Vanier, Canada’s second Canadian Governor General, the Medal is awarded to a person who has shown distinctive leadership or made a significant contribution in the field of public administration or public service in Canada.
